Liverpool have made a bid for Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij, but are unlikely to be successful as it is well below the Serie A club's asking price.

The Reds are looking to add to their central defensive options over the summer transfer window and have most recently been linked with a swoop for Southampton's Virgil van Dijk.

The Saints could want as much as £60m for Van Dijk though, a sum which has already scared off Manchester City.

Liverpool have other targets too and, according to Sky Italia, via Lalaziosiamonoi.it, have slapped in a bid for Netherlands international De Vrij.

The Premier League club's bid is just over £17m – well beneath the asking price slapped on De Vrij's head by Lazio president Claudio Lotito.

Lazio are looking for around £30m in order to allow the Dutchman to leave the Stadio Olimpico this summer.

Liverpool's bid is expected to be rejected and the ball will be in the Reds' court over a fresh bid for Dr Vrij.

He has also attracted interest from another Premier League team in the shape of Chelsea and despite the Blues not having made an official bid, Lazio believe one could arrive.
