Liverpool have comprehensively failed with an offer for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, with the club's proposal coming a whopping €42m short of the Serie A side's asking price.

The Serbia international is rated highly by Lazio, who are in no mood to let him leave for anything less than a substantial sum of money.

Liverpool have tried their luck for the 22-year-old, bidding €28m, according to Italian daily Corriere della Sport.

But Lazio did not even spend time considering the bid sent through by the Premier League giants as they value Savic-Milinkovic at between €70m and €80m.

Liverpool are struggling to hit the asking prices being demanded for their targets this summer, having come up short with bids for Roma winger Mohamed Salah and Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij.

Given the Reds value Milinkovic-Savic at €42m less than Lazio, it would appear unlikely Jurgen Klopp's side will return with an improved offer.

Lazio consider the 22-year-old at the forefront of their project for the future and as such are not willing to consider bids they do not believe match his value to the club.
