Tottenham Hotspur legend Clive Allen insists that Harry Kane is the only player who has the ability to break his single-season goalscoring record.

Allen scored 49 goals in 54 appearances for the Lilywhites during the 1986/87 season, a record that still remains intact.

Jimmy Greaves and Martin Chivers are the other two greats to have notched up the 40 plus goals tally in a single season, during the 1962/63 and 1971/72 seasons, respectively.

While speaking about the record, the 56-year-old said that the only player in the present Tottenham team possessing the ability to match or even surpass it is Kane.

The academy recruit scored 35 goals in 38 overall appearances for the Lilywhites last term, including two hat-tricks in the final week of the season, earning him the Golden Boot award.

Maintaining a consistent goalscoring record for three consecutive seasons is something of an achievement, according to Allen, and if he can continue with that, without any major injury anything is possible, Allen insists.

“The 86-87 season was a phenomenal season for me and one I’ll never forget”, Allen told Tottenham's official website.

“Whether or not anyone beats it…I’ll be honest, I hope they don’t! But if anyone can, it will be Harry, for sure.

“I grew up listening to my father Les [striker in the double-winning team of 1960-61] and Jimmy Greaves took his place in the double side. He told me he was the greatest goalscorer that’s ever been.

“I managed to beat his best total and I’m proud of that, and I see great things in Harry. It’s absolutely fantastic what he’s done.

“Don’t forget after that first season in 2014-15 people were saying’well, it was a bit of a lucky season, a one-off’ but he’s now done it for three seasons, not one.

"To be that consistent at that level is phenomenal, especially in the modern game now.

“He’s in the best place to score goals – so anything is possible!”
