Peter Odemwingie has revealed that he said positive things over a potential move to Celtic to countryman Henry Onyekuru, who is increasingly tipped for a switch to Arsenal.

Celtic made a €1m bid to sign Onyekuru from Belgian side Eupen in the winter transfer window, while other clubs also showed an interest, with the forward going AWOL in an effort to force his way out of the club.

Eupen stood strong, refusing to sell, and Onyekuru returned to the fold.

While Celtic have continued to be linked with the Nigerian, it has been Arsenal who have led the chase, ahead of West Ham, and Onyekuru is increasingly tipped to move to the Emirates Stadium, though Birmingham City are now also keen.

Odemwingie has revealed that his countryman looked to gain his advice in January over a move and he said positive things about joining Celtic, a switch that he feels would have been a stepping stone to the Premier League.

"I don’t know him much really. He rang me asking for help and advice in the last window in January", Odemwingie told the Birmingham Mail.

"He told me there was an option with Celtic and options here and there.

"I said if you want to play in the Premier League, which is where every player should aim at at some point in his career, coming to Scotland means you’re one step closer and people will easily send scouts to watch you there.

"And the work permit issue will be less difficult because he is still part of the UK."
