Manchester City defender Jason Denayer is close to agreeing terms on a contract with Lyon ahead of a proposed transfer to the Ligue 1 club.

Lyon have been in the market for a defender and were after Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala, who has been asked to leave the Etihad this summer on a permanent transfer.

Mangala was even in Lyon last week to discuss a transfer, but the defender’s wage demands coupled with Manchester City’s financial expectations, forced Lyon to look at other options.

The Ligue 1 club turned their attention towards another Manchester City defender in Denayer and the club have pressed the accelerator to take the Belgian to France.

According to French sports daily L’Equipe, the club have been in talks with Denayer’s representatives and are close to agreeing the terms of a contract for the player.

The defender spent last season on loan at Sunderland and there are suggestions that Manchester City are prepared to loan him out again this summer.

It remains to be seen whether Lyon approach Manchester City to sign the player on loan or look to agree a deal that could see Denayer move to France on a permanent contract.

The 21-year-old’s deal with Manchester City runs until 2020.
