Liverpool legend John Aldridge has told Southampton that the Reds will ultimately succeed in signing Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds made a big transfer blunder early in the summer when they contacted Van Dijk and his agent without permission, angering Southampton.

Liverpool apologised to the Saints and dropped their interest in the Dutchman, but as the end of the transfer window drew closer were claimed to be preparing to renew their interest.

Southampton insisted Van Dijk would not be sold, but Reds fans waited with interest on deadline day for developments.

The Saints did ultimately keep Van Dijk, but Aldridge indicated they have only postponed the inevitable.
