Jordan Henderson will not blame Roberto Firmino for missing a penalty after Liverpool could only draw 2-2 against Sevilla at Anfield, to start their Champions League group stage campaign with a draw.

Liverpool had a nightmare start after Emre Can failed to go into a tackle and the subsequent cross was not dealt with by Dejan Lovren, who missed his kick, leaving Wissam Ben Yedder with a close range finish for Sevilla in the fifth minute.

The Reds drew level just after the 20 minute mark as Alberto Moreno put in a pin-point cross and Firmino finished from around six yards out. Liverpool were flying and could have gone ahead soon after, but Can sent his shot wide.

But Liverpool were to go ahead before half time and the goal came in the 37th minute through Mohamed Salah, whose long range shot took a deflection off Sevila defender Simon Kjaer and found the back of the net.

It could then have got even better for Liverpool, who were awarded a penalty after Nicolas Pareja brought down Sadio Mane in the box, but Firmino's penalty kick struck the post.

Liverpool were made to pay for the miss as Sevilla drew level in the 72nd minute through Joaquin Correra.

And then the night ended on a worse note for the Reds as Joe Gomez was sent off, with it finishing 2-2.

For Henderson, Liverpool could have scored more goals and the Reds are disappointed to drop points.

He said on BT Sport: "We could have taken the three points with the chances we created in both halves but they got us on the counter attack.

"We are disappointed not to take the points but the lads reacted well to the weekend [defeat at Manchester City]. We looked exciting and could have scored a few more goals.

"We wanted to win the ball back quickly and get the crowd behind us. The lads reacted brilliantly to going behind and there are positives from the game."

And Firmino will not be blamed for his penalty miss by Henderson.

"Roberto Firmino has scored penalties for us before, players will always miss penalties.

"We had plenty more chances to score so we need to be more ruthless and go three or four up. That is football and we have got done", the Liverpool skipper added.
