Jose Mourinho believes that Manchester United's 4-0 win over Everton was harsh on the Toffees given the effort Ronald Koeman's side put into the Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils took the lead after just four minutes in spectacular fashion after Antonio Valencia crashed a shot from 25 yards out past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Everton could not hit back and Manchester United were comfortable, then putting the gloss on the performance with a late flurry of goals.

Wayne Rooney was brought off by Koeman with eight minutes left and just a minute later Henrikh Mkhitaryan made it 2-0 to the hosts.

A minute before the end of normal time Romelu Lukaku struck against his former club to make it 3-0, before Anthony Martial made it 4-0 through an injury time penalty.

Mourinho was delighted to see his side win, but admits the 4-0 scoreline was harsh on an Everton team who worked hard throughout the 90 minutes at Old Trafford.

"We started really well and in the first 30 minutes were really impressive where we were playing probably our best football since the beginning of the season", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"Everton had a reaction in the second half, we lost a little bit of control. We recovered that.

"We brought some consistency to the game and then I felt we could go with the counter, with Martial for the last minutes for a result that was too much, too heavy for them, they don't deserve to go with this result."

Mourinho was happy to praise Valencia's superb early strike, but was keen to salute his side as a whole.

"An amazing goal, but I think the performance was good even in the difficult moments. The team was consistent, solid, showed solidarity."
