Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom admits that he would have preferred to be taking on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane rather than Wembley.

Other than a win over Borussia Dortmund last week, Tottenham’s record at Wembley recently has not been the best and they are yet to win a league game there this season.

Barnsley will be the visitors on Tuesday night for Tottenham’s third round EFL Cup clash, but Heckingbottom feels the luster from a visit to Wembley has been taken off as it is just an away trip for a cup game for his side.

He believes a game at Wembley can only be special if it is a final and at the moment, playing Tottenham at England’s national ground is just another away game for teams.

Heckingbottom said in a press conference: “Wembley is special but for the match to be special, it has to be a final or an FA Cup semi-final.

“People going to Spurs could think it’s Wembley, but it’s an away fixture.

"For us it’s a third round cup game in an away fixture.

“Finals are what you want to play in.”

He continued: “Personally, I would have [preferred White Hart Lane].

“Never been there, but the boys want to play at Wembley.”

Barnsley are coming into the game on the back of a demoralising 3-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.
