Lou Macari feels the EFL Cup game against Burton Albion on Wednesday night could be the only opportunity for some of the Manchester United players to impress the manager in the coming weeks.

Jose Mourinho has decided against making too many changes to the team in the opening weeks other than a few minor tweaks, which means a number of squad players are yet to get a look in.

The club’s Player of the Year last season Ander Herrera is yet to start a game this term and only suspensions to Phil Jones and Eric Bailly forced Mourinho into fielding the pair of Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling in the Champions League.

Manchester United legend Macari is expecting a number of changes to the line-up against Burton on Wednesday night and feels the fringe players must make most of the opportunity as it could be their only chance in the coming weeks to impress the manager.

The former Red Devil said on MUTV: “I think there will be five or six or even seven changes and possibly even more.

“Such is the form of the team and the players that started the season, this will be the only chance the rest will get in the coming weeks to play in a decent game.

“They will go out and try and show the manager that they should be in the team.”

Manchester United won the EFL Cup last season and Mourinho is keen to progress deep in the cup competitions again to utilise his squad strength.
