Norwich City midfielder Mario Vrancic has been left disappointed after announcing he wants to face Liverpool in the next round of the EFL Cup.

Vrancic scored a brace in Norwich's 3-1 win away at Brentford to book the Canaries a spot in the next round of the domestic cup competition.

But as Norwich were winning, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool were being beaten 2-0 by Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, crushing Vrancic's dreams.

The midfielder was blissfully unaware of Liverpool's exit and was asked following Norwich's win who he wants in the next round.

He told reporters, fully expecting the Reds to have gone through: "I'd like to play against Liverpool."

The Norwich midfielder then had his hopes dashed after learning of Liverpool's exit.

Vrancic also admitted Norwich knew it was a case of all or nothing in the cup and he dubbed his outing a "brilliant day".

"I'm pretty happy! I scored my first goals for Norwich and we're through. It's a brilliant day.

"Cup football is all or nothing. We're happy we're into the next round", Vrancic added.

There are still a number of Premier League teams Vrancic's side could be paired with in the next round, while Norwich are next in action in the Championship this weekend when they face Bristol City at Carrow Road.
