Former Premier League striker Jan Age Fjortoft feels Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's likeable persona is helping him to stay away from heavier scrutiny of his handling of affairs at Anfield.

The Reds, who were knocked out of the EFL Cup after losing 2-0 to Leicester City on Tuesday night, are now winless in four games in all competitions.

Klopp has thus far failed to address the defensive frailties at Liverpool, despite being at the club since October 2015 and as such having four full transfer windows to do his business.

Liverpool, who are currently eighth in the Premier League, have conceded nine league goals, the second-highest in the division.

Klopp came in for criticism for failing to land a centre-back in the summer after Liverpool's chase for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk hit a roadblock.

And he recently insisted there is no quality issue with his defenders and if he could have improved his options he would have, indicating he saw no one better available.

But Fjortoft, who turned out for Swindon Town, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United in the 1990s, believes the former Borussia Dortmund boss does not come under scrutiny more often, such as Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal, owing to his affable nature.

“I like Klopp. Media like Klopp. Everybody likes Klopp”, he tweeted.

“That's why they leave him alone.

“Imagine if he was Wenger or even worse Van Gaal.”

Liverpool, who are yet to win a trophy under Klopp, will once again lock horns with Leicester City at the weekend, albeit in a Premier League contest.
