Former Celtic defender Mark Wilson believes the Rangers fans need to be patient and should not urge their team to attack all the time on Saturday.

The Gers, whose recent record against Celtic has been poor, will take on the Hoops in the season’s first Old Firm derby at Ibrox on Saturday.

In earlier years the Rangers faithful would rally their team to go forward against Celtic, who beat the Light Blues five times in all competitions last season.

And Wilson thinks the Rangers supporters should understand the difference in quality between the two clubs now and remain patient as he feels Pedro Caixinha’s team might have to defend for longer periods on Saturday due to Celtic’s superior class.

“I think the Rangers fans will have to be patient with their team”, he said on the Ladbrokes Football Show.

“In the years gone by at Ibrox the Rangers fans would be cheering Rangers and saying, ‘get up the pitch.’

“But they have to realise that there is a gap in quality now.

“They might have to sit back and keep it tight for long period of times and stay in the game because Celtic have the quality to score when they want.”

Celtic, who thrashed Rangers twice by 5-1 margins last season, with the second being at Ibrox in late April, are currently top of the league table with 16 points from six games, five ahead of their third-placed arch-rivals.
