Former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has announced his intention to move into management.

Alonso, 35, called time on a glittering playing career at the end of last term, hanging up his boots following a spell with German giants Bayern Munich.




The Spaniard remains a popular figure at former club Liverpool, who he helped to success in the Champions League in 2005, also clocking up 210 appearances in all competitions for the Reds.

Now Alonso is to follow in the footsteps of his then Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard, by moving into the dugout.
 


Alonso was quoted as saying by beIN Sports: "After 17 years in the game, I have considered the next step in my career.

"I have decided to go into management.

"Find out [where] soon", the 35-year-old added.

Alonso also picked up an FA Cup while at Liverpool, with the Spaniard also tasting success at Real Madrid by collecting La Liga, two Copa del Reys and one further Champions League.

He then won three Bundesliga titles and one German Cup at Bayern Munich, in three seasons at the Allianz Arena.
