Pedro Caixinha has downplayed the importance of Rangers' friendly against Greenock Morton at the weekend by stating that his side’s preparations during the international break were not dependant on the game.

The Gers, who were scheduled to travel to Canada to face Portuguese giants Benfica in a friendly last Friday, saw the match cancelled at the very last moment.

As a result, another friendly against Morton was organised for Saturday, with Rangers drawing the contest 3-3.

The match provided a chance for Caixinha to assess his squad, ahead of their trip to St. Johnstone on Friday.

However, the Portuguese tactician insisted that he was not thinking much about the game as he focused more on training his charges before the contest against Morton.

But Caixinha went on to add that he was happy with his side’s performance in the friendly as he thinks the club are going in the right direction.

“It was not only about the game”, he said on Rangers TV, when asked was it important for his side to have a game at the end of their hard work in training last week.

“If I was thinking about that game, I wouldn’t have trained them with so much intensity and pace in the previous session before the game.

“I was much more concerned about knowing if they [Rangers players] were going to reproduce what we did with that pace knowing that they were not fresh enough to perform like that.

“They did a very good job.

“They made a few mistakes but they also learnt from them.

“But in the overall the things are going in the direction we want.”

Rangers, who are currently third in the league table, headed into the international break on the back of a 4-1 win over Hamilton Academical.
