Liverpool may still make a move to sign Stefan de Vrij from Lazio if the Dutchman signs a new contract.

De Vrij is out of contract at Lazio next summer and the Rome giants have been working overtime in a bid to convince him to pen a fresh deal.

A release clause, which could be set at around €25m, could be included in the deal and Liverpool, who have De Vrij on their radar now, could pounce.

According to Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, Liverpool are unlikely to be put off bidding for De Vrij in January even if he signs a new contract.

And a release clause of just €25m would be well within reach for Jurgen Klopp's men.

Liverpool were on the lookout for a centre-back in the summer transfer window and made Virgil van Dijk their priority target.

Despite Southampton making it clear they would not sell Van Dijk, Klopp chose not to go for an alternative, which has led to intense criticism as the Reds have suffered defensive problems this term.

But the Reds may now be lining up De Vrij in the event Van Dijk is also unavailable in January.
