Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson thinks that Pedro Caixinha deserves credit for working on the Gers defence, which kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win away at St Johnstone tonight.

Rangers have struggled to keep clean sheets this season and Caixinha has made it his mission to tighten things up at the back.

The Gers backline stood firm and were comfortable at McDiarmid Park this evening, as they recorded a 3-0 win with goals from Carlos Pena (two) and Graham Dorrans.

Thompson thinks Caixinha has been looking to tighten the backline and deserves credit for having been able to do so.

"They deserve enormous credit for the way they defended tonight", Thompson said after the win over St Johnstone on BBC Sportsound.

"It has been something that Pedro Caixinha has mentioned he wanted to improve.

"Credit where it is due – if he has been working on it, which he says he has during the international break, then they did defend well, especially at set plays, of which we found out there were 17 corners, which is remarkable.

"Massive credit to him for that", he added.

Rangers taking the full three points from St Johnstone means they have now cut the gap to rivals Celtic to just three points in the Scottish Premiership, although Brendan Rodgers' men do have a game in hand and could swell their advantage again.
