Noel Whelan was not impressed with Pablo Hernandez's display in Leeds United's home defeat against Reading, accusing the Spaniard of trying unrealistic Roy of the Rovers stuff and giving the ball away as a result.

Hernandez was off colour in Leeds' 1-0 loss against the Royals at Elland Road, though he did have a golden opportunity to earn the Whites a share of the spoils when Samu Saiz was brought down in the penalty area late on.

But the Spaniard's penalty was poor and saved, meaning Leeds have now lost four of their last five Championship games with alarm bells ringing at Elland Road.

Whelan thinks Hernandez had a bad game and was guilty of trying to do unrealistic things, such as trying to beat three men at once.

The former White said on BBC Radio Leeds: "It [beating three players at once] is Roy of the Rovers stuff that only happens in magazines, and every now and again, maybe on a training ground, but not against proper professional players sometimes.

"There were no gaps there for him to go through.

"He's trying to run through brick walls and he's just giving the ball away.

"Or he's trying to do the silly nutmeg in the wrong area.

"You've got to keep the ball. We're looking to win a game or get back into it."

Hernandez has often come in from criticism from some Leeds fans, who feels in games where the Whites are up against it he can offer little.

It remains to be seen if he keeps his spot in the side for the visit to Bristol City, a match which has now taken on big importance for an out-of-form Leeds side.
