Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson believes Barcelona are getting personal with the Reds by targeting Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool wanted Van Dijk in the summer transfer window and the player was keen to make the move from Southampton, however the Reds made a mess of their approach, leading to the Saints threatening to report them to the Premier League for an illegal approach; Liverpool then dropped their interest.

Van Dijk remains on Liverpool's radar, but now it has been claimed Barcelona also want the Dutchman.

And with Liverpool rejecting multiple offers from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho in the summer, Thompson thinks the Blaugrana are becoming personal.

The former Liverpool midfielder wrote on Twitter: "Barca are getting personal in trying to scupper any success for LFC.

Southampton have remained firm about not selling Van Dijk, but the centre-back recently hinted his situation could change in the January transfer window.

Barcelona banked a whopping €222m from selling Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and had bids over €100m rejected by Liverpool for Coutinho.
