Former Liverpool star Gary Gillespie feels Maribor were "awful" after the Reds thrashed the Slovenian outfit 7-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Slovenian giants were no match for Liverpool and fell behind as early as the fourth minute, courtesy of Roberto Firmino’s goal.

Philippe Coutinho then doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 13th minute before Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as Jurgen Klopp’s team went into the half-time break 4-0 up.

Firmino scored his second goal of the night early in the second half, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold also finding the back of the net against a hapless Maribor team.

And Gillespie stated that although Liverpool played very well, the home team put in an extremely poor performance; Maribor are managed by former Leeds United boss Darko Milanic.

“I think you go into these games and you’re a little bit apprehensive and you’re not quite sure what Maribor are going to deliver up”, he said on LFC TV.

“But they were awful.

“As good as Liverpool were, they were poor.

“But Liverpool played really well, not just going forward but defensively as well.

“They protected the ball, won second balls in most areas of the pitch and every time Liverpool got forward, they looked as if they were going to score.

“And even when they didn’t look as if they were going to score, Maribor were gifting them balls in dangerous positions.”

It was Liverpool’s first win in the group stage of the Champions League this season and the huge margin of victory ensured the Reds have become Group E leaders on goal difference.
