Ray Houghton thinks that Liverpool showed how good they can be against Maribor on Tuesday night, with the Reds legend urging to club to take the positives into their upcoming matches.

Jurgen Klopp’s team, who headed into the game against Maribor in the Champions League on the back of a poor run of form, thrashed the Slovenian outfit 7-0 to go top of Group E on goal difference.

Liverpool headed into the half-time break 4-0 up and they did not drop their momentum in the second half and scored three more times.

There were other positives to take from the game as well as summer signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who came on as a second half substitute, scored his maiden goal for the club in Slovenia.

And Houghton explained that he was thoroughly impressed with Liverpool’s performance from the first minute to the last against Maribor as he called on the Merseyside giants to build on the win.

“If you look at the overall performance from Liverpool, I felt from minute one to minute 90, they were brilliant”, he said on LFC TV.

“I just thought the attitude was superb.

“We’ve all played in games when you’re winning at half-time comfortably and you know the opposition are not going to get back in it – you slack off in the second half, you’re not as clinical and you may be conserving a bit of energy.

“But there was none of that [against Maribor].

“What was great for Jurgen was bringing on the subs and they all performed at the same level as well.

“For Oxlade-Chamberlain to get his first goal for the club is absolutely brilliant for him.

“It should give him so much confidence.

“Hopefully they can take it to the upcoming fixtures, because now they have put down a marker as to how well they can play and how they can score goals and how they can defend.

“Now you've got to take that to the next match and the next match and the next match.”

Liverpool are next up against Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League fixture on Sunday.
