Former Jamaica international and Premier League midfielder Robbie Earle says that Liverpool are not working on basic defensive structure on the training ground.

In his pundit role for NBC, Earle watched on as Liverpool turned in a shambolic defensive display at Wembley as Tottenham Hotspur ran riot and ran out 4-1 winners in the Premier League fixture.

Liverpool have now conceded an astonishing 16 goals in just nine Premier League games and sit a lowly ninth in the standings, with a goal difference of minus two.

Boss Jurgen Klopp is being heavily criticised for not addressing Liverpool's defensive failings in over two years at the helm and Earle says the German is not doing the work needed on the training pitch.

Earle said on NBC: "They are not doing the work on the training ground.

"The first goal, [Joe] Gomez is deeper than the rest of the defenders, so they are not working on what you call your defensive line.

“[Joel] Matip is playing for offside when the ball is in play, he should be reacting off his team-mate, and [Dejan] Lovren makes mistakes.

Those are a catalogue of mistakes his defence is making."

Klopp has insisted there is no issue with the quality of his defenders, refusing to move for an alternative centre-back target when being unable to land Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the summer, and also not dipping into his funds to bring in a new goalkeeper.

Liverpool are one point behind seventh placed Newcastle United and two off sixth placed Watford.
