Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo has revealed that Anfield will always remain a very special stadium for him.

Manquillo, who was snapped up by the Magpies from Atletico Madrid in the summer, joined Liverpool on a two-year loan deal in 2014.

The 23-year-old managed 19 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, with very few of those coming in the second half of the 2014/15 campaign.

As a result, Atletico Madrid terminated the Spaniard’s loan deal with Liverpool at the end of the season and loaned him out to Marseille for the 2015/16 campaign instead.

Manquillo then signed for Sunderland on loan in 2016 before Newcastle roped him in permanently on a three-year deal during the summer transfer window.

And Manquillo, who said that his stint at Liverpool was his first outside Spain, insisted that Anfield will forever be close to his heart.

“I was a very young player, and that was my first experience abroad”, he told Newcastle's matchday programme.

“I have very good memories – beautiful memories – and Anfield will always be a very special stadium..

“The atmosphere is what makes all the difference – it is unique.

“I think that’s what attracts a lot of players to the Premier League.

“This is my third year in the Premier League now, and I really enjoy playing in this kind of atmosphere.”

Manquillo, who played in the Champions League during his time at Liverpool, has thus far turned out seven times for Newcastle.
