Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson has questioned what the Gers have to gain by keeping Pedro Caixinha as manager and admitted he does not think the Portuguese can progress the Ibrox side further.

Caixinha saw his Rangers side beaten 2-0 by Motherwell at Hampden on Saturday, missing out on the chance to book a spot in the Scottish League Cup final, where Celtic were waiting.

The Gers boss has accused his players of embarrassing not just the club, but also himself with their performance at Hampden.

Thompson thinks that Caixinha is now not able to move Rangers forward and asked three key questions, all of which he has been forced to answer in the negative.

He said on BBC Sport Scotland Facebook Live: "I can't see moving forward how Caixinha is going to improve this Rangers team.

"And by that I mean, how is he going to get them to challenge Celtic? Are they going to win a national trophy? And are they going to beat Aberdeen to second in the league?

All of those questions are in my opinion answered no.

So where's the progress and moving forward, what's the point in keeping him long term, rather than getting rid of him just now?" he added.

Caixinha is looking for his Rangers players to give him a reaction when they take on Kilmarnock in a Scottish Premiership fixture at Ibrox on Wednesday.

The match will be Kilmarnock's first under new manager Steve Clarke.
