Liverpool Under-23 boss Neil Critchley is of the opinion that the 3-1 scoreline in favour of his side was the right one, following their win over Manchester United in a Premier League 2 encounter on Monday night.

The young Reds, who headed into the game on the back of a 2-0 loss to Derby County last week, were the dominant side in the first half at Leigh Sports Village and took a 14th minute lead through Ovie Ejaria.

Manchester United came back strongly after the break and equalised in the hour mark, courtesy of James Wilson.

But goals from Marko Grujic and Harry Wilson in the 70th and 74th minutes respectively helped Liverpool to beat the Red Devils and consolidate their place at the top of the table.

And Critchley, who feels the scoreline was the true reflection of the game, however admitted that his side were not as good in the second half.

“We played very well in the first half and completely dominated the game”, he told Liverpool’s official site.

“We were disappointed to only be 1-0 up at half-time.

“In the second half, the longer it goes on at 1-0 you know they are always likely to create an opportunity.

“I felt we contributed to our own downfall a little bit at the start of the second half; we spoke about that at half-time, about being concentrated in possession and punishing them.

“I felt we gave them some impetus and confidence in the second half.

“But our character after that, at 1-1, was excellent.

“And I think 3-1, even though they had a couple of chances in the second half, was the right scoreline.”

The win helped Liverpool to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League 2 table.
