Newcastle United are pushing to sign Leicester City striker and West Ham target Islam Slimani on deadline day, according to the Chronicle.

Slimani has been a peripheral figure at Leicester this season and has been tipped to leave the club during the winter transfer window, with interest from a few Premier League clubs.

West Ham have been keeping tabs on the Algeria international and there are claims that David Moyes wants him to be one of the players the Hammers sign on deadline day.

However, the east London club are set to face stiff competition from the north east for Slimani as the striker is a priority for Newcastle today.

Rafael Benitez has been desperate to sign a striker in the winter window and has already seen Newcastle fail to secure the signature of Feyenoord hitman Nicolai Jorgensen.
