The agent of Arsenal and Liverpool midfield target Max Meyer is not expected to contact the Schalke hierarchy for fresh talks over a new contract for his client.

Negotiations have reached a standstill after the midfielder rejected a four-contact worth €5.5m from Schalke last month and he is now expected to leave the club in the summer on a free transfer.

Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel has insisted that the club cannot afford to wait for the midfielder to make a decision over his future any longer but in the background the club remain keen to hold on to him.

Roger Wittmann, the player’s agent, met Meyer on Sunday night and he admits that the midfielder’s future was discussed at length.

The German’s agent told Bild: “Yes, we met and of course talked about Max’s future.”

However, a meeting between Schalke and the player’s agent seems unlikely any time soon as the club believe Meyer’s representatives are trying to engineer a move.

And it has been claimed that Wittmann is also unlikely to approach Heidel for fresh talks as he feels the whole situation was escalated by the Schalke sporting director.

Clubs such as Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal have been interested in snapping up the young midfielder in the summer on a free transfer.

Barcelona are also believed to be keeping tabs on him and for now it seems a free transfer away from Schalke is the likely possibility for Meyer at the end of the season.
