Jurgen Klopp has no doubt that his Liverpool side deserved their 5-1 aggregate win over Manchester City in the Champions League, after the Reds ran out 2-1 winners at the Etihad Stadium to book a semi-final spot.

Manchester City came roaring out of the blocks on home turf and scored with just two minutes on the clock through Gabriel Jesus.

Virgil van Dijk was guilty of giving away possession and Manchester City broke through Raheem Sterling, who then squared for Jesus to finish past Loris Karius.

Manchester City, playing with high intensity, were bossing the game and had a penalty appeal turned down as Sterling went down as he tried to beat Andrew Robertson.

The Citizens then hit the post through Bernardo Silva, while just minutes later they had a goal ruled out for offside, with Leroy Sane's effort chalked off.

Liverpool came into the game as Manchester City's intensity dipped and scored through Mohamed Salah in the 56th minute as he got on the end of a Sadio Mane effort which was turned away and chipped the ball over several Citizens defenders and into the back of the net.

Manchester City threw caution to the wind and Liverpool scored again, Roberto Firmino sidefooting into the back of the net with 13 minutes left.

It finished 2-1 to Liverpool, meaning they advance to the last four.

And Klopp insists he liked his side's reaction to falling behind early on, while he believes Liverpool deserved to progress.

"It was quite difficult tonight, again especially with the start. This wonderful goal that we served them on a plate. I was expecting something like that but I liked the reaction immediately after that", he told BT Sport.

"City took all the risks they could take, we needed a bit of luck and a disciplined defending formation. I was not overly happy at half-time to be honest.

"He [Pep Guardiola] took all the risks and it was his decision and it could have been the absolute right one.

"They could have scored two or three goals in the first half, but it was 100 per cent clear that if we win the ball we would have an opportunity.

"The last situation in the first half was how you do the counter-attack and that’s how we scored the two goals", Klopp stressed.

"It’s not about perfection it’s about the result, the character, the mentality, really fighting for the result. We defended well.

"It is not our best game, but we deserved it at the end."
