The father of Manchester United youngster Indy Boonen has expressed his delight at his son training with the senior squad for the first time.

The 19-year-old joined the Manchester United academy from Genk in 2015 and has been a regular part of their academy sides over the last few seasons.

Despite Manchester United’s relegation from the Premier League 2, Boonen, 19, played regularly for the Under-23s and even represented the Under-19 team in the UEFA Youth League.

Considered a promising talent by many at Manchester United, Boonen finally got an opportunity to impress manager Jose Mourinho earlier this week when he was called up for training with the first team.

His father Jacky Boonen, a former professional footballer too, was happy to see his son given a look in by Mourinho in training and is pleased with the way his career has been progressing.

“It was the first time he trained with the first team”, he told Belgian outlet Sporza.

“Players from the first team often train with the reserves, but it was the first time Indy was in the first team training sessions.

“What the coach Jose Mourinho and Romelu Lukaku told him I don’t know.

“Indy has played a good season with the Under-21s and was good with Under-19 national team in the elite round of the European Championship last year.”

Boonen is yet to be handed an outing with the senior team and it remains to be seen whether he at least makes the bench for a Premier League game before the end of the season.
