Noel Whelan has insisted that Samu Saiz's attitude is not what Leeds United need, after he reacted angrily to being substituted during the Whites' 2-1 win over Barnsley at Elland Road on Saturday.

Caleb Ekuban replaced Saiz in the 84th minute of the Championship encounter and the Spaniard was unhappy with head coach Paul Heckingbottom's decision.

Saiz served a lengthy suspension for spitting at an opponent earlier this year and Whelan is not pleased with the attitude the attacker is showing.

The former Leeds man admits that regardless of what Saiz brings in terms of skill, such an attitude is not welcome in the dressing room and he should see Heckingbottom privately if he is unhappy.

"He's probably done the two worst things you want to do as a footballer, which is spitting at an opponent and coming off here, when you're winning the game and you should be supporting your team-mates and manager, and you've preferred to start kicking boards and water bottles about, and slapping your shinpads around", Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds.

"That is not what I'd want in the dressing room.

"Yes he's got skill, but do you need people like that around, who think they are above the manager and the other players? No you do not.

"If you're going to start kicking things around then do it in the changing room.

"If you're unhappy with the manager then go and see the manager", he added.

Saiz is widely considered to be the most successful buy Leeds made in last summer's transfer window, with other new arrivals either failing to have an impact or struggling to affect games in the Whites' favour on a consistent basis.
