David May believes Ander Herrera has all the attributes to replace Antonio Valencia as the Manchester United captain.

Herrera remains a popular member of the Manchester United squad amongst the fans, but injuries and form meant that he has not been playing regular football this season.

However, the Spaniard has come to the fore in recent weeks and scored the winning goal in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend.

While Alexis Sanchez was the official Man of the Match, in the eyes of many Herrera deserved the accolade because of his tenacious midfield performance and it is not the first time he is being talked up as the next Manchester United captain.

And May feels Herrera could be the better option to lead the Manchester United side than Valencia, who is not known for being too vocal either in the dressing room or on the pitch.

The former defender insisted that Herrera has the quality, the ability to rally the troops and the mean streak that every great Manchester United captain had.

May said on MUTV’s The Paddy Crerand Show: “I look at him as a leader on the pitch that other people can get inspiration from and rub off.

“This is no disrespect towards Antonio Valencia, but I don’t see Antonio as a leader on the pitch as Herrera is, Michael Carrick was and a Rio [Ferdinand] or a [Nemanja] Vidic.

“Ander is a type of player who will run around and do his job and go and score a goal as well.

“He doesn’t get the plaudits he deserves.”

He added: “You look at all our great captains, they were all nasty. He speaks ever so well, he’s a leader.”
