Former Manchester United defender David May believes Phil Jones is the best centre-back in Jose Mourinho’s squad when he is fully fit.

Jones was a surprise inclusion in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, but his assured performance against Tottenham Hotspur in Manchester United’s win vindicated Mourinho’s trust in him.

The England defender has again suffered a stop-start season because of injuries and there are suggestions he could be on the chopping block come the summer transfer window.

However, his performance at Wembley on Saturday again showed the quality he possesses as a centre-back and May believes he is the best option in the current Manchester United squad when fit.

The former Red Devil is a fan of Jones’ consistency, but believes his penchant for a tackle is also his downfall as it sometimes leads to unwarranted injuries, which has been an issue all his career.
