Veteran Dutch coach Aad de Mos thinks that Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk needs to be more ruthless as a defender, but cautioned that it is almost impossible for him to suddenly add that to his game.

Van Dijk has been in superb form for Liverpool since joining the Reds in the January transfer window and has helped Jurgen Klopp's side to tighten up their backline.

He was part of the defence that conceded two late goals against Roma on Tuesday night though, to leave the Champions League semi-final tie 5-2 in Liverpool's favour ahead of a second leg in Italy.

De Mos thinks that Van Dijk is the strongest link in an otherwise weak Liverpool defence.

He told Omroep Brabant: "The rest of the defence is not really good, and there is also a bad 'keeper."

De Mos is interested to now see how Van Dijk copes with the challenge in the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico, when Roma are expected to attack.

He cautioned Van Dijk can make mistakes and also needs to be more ruthless.

"That will be a hot evening for Van Dijk, with the full pressure of AS Roma on his defence.

"He is always good for a mistake in the game.

"I think he is too nice as a defender.

"He needs to be a bit more ruthless, though that is almost impossible to learn.

"It must be within you", the veteran coach added.

De Mos, 71, last coached at Sparta Rotterdam in 2010 and has taken charge of no fewer than 14 clubs in his career.

The Dutchman has worked in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Greece.
