Former Scotland international Pat Nevin has revealed he told David Moyes to buy Virgil van Dijk for Manchester United, when the Dutchman was still at Celtic.

Moyes was given the job at Old Trafford in 2013 as Manchester United looked for someone to carry on from the success of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The Scot had a slow start on the signings front, but he did receive advice from countryman Nevin, who told him to fork out just £10m to take Van Dijk from Celtic.

Van Dijk eventually moved to Southampton in 2015 for £13m and is now at Liverpool, having been made the most expensive defender in world football with a £75m switch earlier this year.

"When Moyes was at Manchester United, and he is a great friend of mine, I went to him and said get Van Dijk from Celtic, he will only cost you £10m and he's fabulous", Nevin revealed on LFC TV.

"And he didn't do it.

"I think everyone now agrees he's a bit special."

Van Dijk has helped the Liverpool backline tighten up and has formed a solid partnership with Dejan Lovren.

Liverpool have conceded just six goals in their last nine Premier League games, the best defensive record in the division over the period.

Van Dijk will hope to play his part in a Champions League win later this month, with the Reds due to play Real Madrid in the final in Kyiv.
