Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette has conceded that a lean patch during the season had an effect on his game and affected him mentally.

The Gunners paid big money to secure the Frenchman’s signature last summer from Lyon and he finished the season as the club’s top scorer with 17 goals, despite a few injuries and a lack of form.

Lacazette had an especially lean patch during the middle of the campaign when he failed to score in ten consecutive games and it did have an adverse effect on Arsenal’s results as well.

The striker conceded that it was a difficult time to go through and it took him a while to realise that his form had hit a slump as he continued to fail to put away the chances.

The Frenchman admits that his lean patch affected him mentally and revealed that Arsene Wenger did speak to him to make sure that he did not lose confidence from his game.

Asked about his lack of form during the middle of the season, Lacazette told French sports daily L’Equipe: “I had never gone through such a period.

“In the evening I used to go back home and I said to myself, ‘come on, the next one I’ll score’, but I didn’t.

"In fact I only realised after five or six games.

“I don’t know how other strikers deal with this but it started to get into my head and I couldn’t blame anyone, it was on me.

“I couldn’t blame the coach as he was playing me or my partners because I had opportunities.

“It was me.”

He added: “Yes he [Wenger] spoke to me once or twice during that period to say that it happened to all strikers and it will come back.”
