Arsene Wenger believes his former captain Mikel Arteta has all the qualities and attributes need to succeed him at Arsenal ahead of next season.

The former Arsenal skipper has emerged as the leading candidate to become the new Gunners manager despite his lack of experience in top level management.

Arsenal are said to be expected to hold talks with Arteta and his representatives today and despite other coaches being in the fray, he is the favourite to take charge at the Emirates in the summer.

And Wenger has backed the Spaniard to succeed him at Arsenal and feels he has all the qualities to succeed as the Gunners manager after him.

Being the former captain of the club, the Frenchman believes Arteta will know what standards are expected at the club and feels an experienced coaching staff would cancel out his lack of it in top level management.

However, Wenger is very aware that he cannot be seen as influencing Arsenal’s decision and stressed that he will back whoever the club decide to appoint.

Asked about Arteta, the former Arsenal manager told beIN Sports: “He has all the qualities to do the job, yes.

“I have seen as well that he is one of the favourites. He was a leader, he has good passion for the game and he knows the club well.

“He knows what is important at the club. He was captain of the club so why not?”

Asked about the Spaniard’s lack of experience, the Wenger said: “But I left a lot of experience behind me.

“Steve Bould was with me for six years, Jens Lehmann as well. Unfortunately some of the staff left.

“He has been assistant to [Pep] Guardiola as well, but overall I think he has the qualities.

“But I don’t want to influence it publicly and it’s important they make their choice objectively and once they make the decision, I will support it.”
