Arsenal have confirmed the appointment of Unai Emery as the club's new manager, with CEO Ivan Gazidis insisting the process which led to the Spaniard was a thorough one.

The Gunners opted to part ways with long serving manager Arsene Wenger at the end of the season and have worked quickly to put his successor in place before the summer.

Arsenal had been widely tipped to appoint Mikel Arteta, but surprisingly went for Emery, a choice Gazidis says everyone at the club agreed with.

And the CEO explained that the process which led to the appointment of Emery was a thorough one, containing background checks, data and video analysis, and also interviews.

Gazidis told the club's official site: "Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly.

"His hard-working and passionate approach and his sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward.

"We conducted a confidential, wide-ranging and rigorous search involving extensive background references, data and video analysis, and personal meetings with all the candidates we shortlisted.

"All were interested in the position and we were unanimous in our choice of Unai to drive the next chapter of our history."

Emery takes over a side that finished in sixth place in the Premier League this season and will again be playing Europa League football in the forthcoming campaign.

It has been claimed the new Arsenal manager will only have a summer transfer kitty of £50m plus player sales, meaning the Gunners cannot afford mistakes in the transfer market as they bid to break back into the Premier League's top four.
