Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has ruled out a move for free agent defender James Collins, who is not even viewed as a short-term option for the Gers, according to the Evening Times

Collins has been released by West Ham ahead of the end of his contract, but the Hammers have been linked with potentially looking to re-sign him, with the final decision lying in the hands of new manager Manuel Pellegrini.

An experienced defender, he has been seen as an option for new Rangers boss Gerrard, but it is claimed that the Gers have ruled out moving for him.

The centre-back, who is due to turn 35 years old in August, is not even viewed as a short term option for the Scottish giants.

Instead Rangers are keen on Brighton defender Connor Goldson, someone who has fallen down the pecking order at the Amex.

But the Gers have not been willing yet to meet Brighton's asking price for Goldson, which is claimed to be close to the £2m mark.

Brighton signed Goldson from Shrewsbury Town in 2015 and he helped the Seagulls win promotion to the Premier League, though he made just five Championship appearances in the campaign.
