Newcastle United have opened talks with Lyon in a bid to sign the French club's young striker Myziane Maolida.

The 19-year-old, who is locked down on a contract with Les Gones until the summer of 2022, has already been the subject of interest from La Liga side Real Betis.

The Spanish side are prepared to put €8m on the table for Maolida once they raise the cash by selling players.

Now Newcastle have come forward and, according to French sports daily L'Equipe, have opened talks with Lyon to sign the teenager.

The Magpies are engaged in a desperate scramble to add to their squad before the transfer window for Premier League clubs to make signings closes next week.

Real Betis are in no such rush, with Spanish sides not having followed the Premier League in shortening their window.

Maolida is a France Under-19 international and was recently involved as his national side reached the semi-final of the European Under-19 Championship.

Lyon's signing of former Tottenham Hotspur striker Reo Griffiths could open the door for Maolida to leave.
