Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has commented on his side's interest in John McGinn amid Aston Villa moving to sign the midfielder.

The Bhoys have seen multiple bids for McGinn rejected by Hibernian over the course of the summer so far, but have still been rated as a possible destination for the player.

However, Aston Villa have been given permission to hold talks with McGinn and look in pole position to snap him up.

And Rodgers admits that Celtic's failure to close out a deal has left room for other clubs to move to sign McGinn.

"He's a player we clearly wanted to sign", Rodgers was quoted as saying by STV.

"We haven't been able to complete a deal and when you don't do that it always opens the door for other teams."

McGinn was in superb form for Hibernian last season and was expected to attract significant interest in this summer's transfer window.

Celtic still have time to focus on other targets however if McGinn does complete a move to join Steve Bruce at Aston Villa.

McGinn has just a year left on his contract with Hibernian.
