Premier League outfit Southampton are keen to hold on to young left-back Matt Targett, who has been linked with a move to Fulham, according to Sky Sports News.

The 22-year-old is in the radar of the Premier League newcomers, with the Saints believed to have quoted a fee in the region of £20m for the player.

However, with the transfer window in England closing within hours it would be difficult for Mark Hughes to get in a replacement for the player.

And therefore the Saints have decided to opt against any move to let Targett leave, in spite of him not being among the key players at St Mary's Stadium.

The former England Under-21 spent the second half of last season on loan at Craven Cottage, helping Fulham to get promoted to the Premier League via the playoffs.

He featured in a total of 21 games for the Cottagers, providing his team-mates with two assists and even going on to add to the scoresheet once.

Targett is a product of Southampton's youth academy, being promoted to senior level in 2013 after spending ten years at youth level.

He has a contract with the club that runs until June 2022.
