Newcastle United manager Rafael Benítez has insisted that it was a surprise to see Tottenham Hotspur not sign even a single player in the summer, but he believes that Spurs are still a strong team.

The Lilywhites were the only team not to sign even a single player during the entire course of the summer Premier League window, with manager Mauricio Pochettino insisting that he is more than happy with the squad he has at his disposal at present.

Benitez, who himself was busy signing players and who now prepares to take on the Londoners in Newcastle's first game of the season on Saturday, insists that Tottenham's decision was surprising, though even without any new additions they look lethal and can give any team a run for their money on any given day.

"I would say it is a surprise that they didn’t sign anyone", Benitez told a press conference.

"But at the same time, they had at least eleven players in the World Cup.

"We are talking about one of the best teams in the Premier League, and in terms of English players, Tottenham are the best team."

In the importance of new players in his team, Benitez added that players coming in can bring competition, which can only be good for the progress of the team.

"To bring in new players is important, because if a player sees someone running faster, they have to run faster too. The competition is good."

The Magpies will play their second game of the season next Saturday against Cardiff City.
