Maribor striker Jasmin Mesanovic believes that his team will need to be solid in defence in order to overcome the Rangers challenge.

The Gers hold a 3-1 lead over their opponents in the Europa League third qualifying round tie and Maribor will have a mountain to climb if they want to overturn the deficit.

The 26-year-old striker though refuses to be pessimistic and insists that his team will have to show that they are superior when they host Steven Gerrard's side on Thursday.

Mesanovic will be more encouraged by the fact that they come fresh out of a 5-0 league win over Gorica at the weekend and he hopes that his team will take that form into their next game and beat the Gers.

"We need to be effective in attack, which we have demonstrated that we can do", the striker told his club's official website.

"We need to be solid in defence as we have been in most games this season."

Rangers will face either Russian side FC Ufa or Luxembourg-based Progres Niederkorn if they overcome Maribor.

Gerrard's side are in good form at present having won one and drawn one of their two league matches.
