Serie B outfit Livorno are in talks to sign Leeds United linked striker Jerry Mbakogu, who is available on a free transfer.

Leeds had an option to sign the Nigerian striker from Carpi for a set fee of £3m, but the deal expired at the end of June.

There was talk that Leeds were trying to sign him for a lower amount but it became clear new Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa had jettisoned the move.

Carpi and Mbakogu mutually agreed to terminate his contract earlier this month and the striker as been on the lookout for a new club since then.

And according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Serie B outfit Livorno have been in touch with the player’s representatives over signing Mbakogu on a free transfer.

The Italian transfer window slams shut later today but as he is a free agent, Livorno have time to get the deal over the line beyond the end of the deadline.

His record for Carpi in Serie B is believed to be a key reason behind Livorno’s interest.

Mbakogu was believed to be keen on moving to England with Leeds but it seems he could be continuing in Italy for the time being.
