Steven Gerrard's decision to appoint Gary McAllister as his assistant at Rangers was a stroke of genius, Ally McCoist believes.

The Liverpool legend was appointed Rangers boss on a four-year contract from the start of June and has had a bright start to life at Ibrox.

Gerrard's Rangers are unbeaten and have also progressed to the Europa League playoff round, closing in on a spot in the group stage.

Rangers legend McCoist thinks that McAllister's role has been key and Gerrard bringing him in was a superb call.

"I think that choice [to appoint McAllister] was nothing short of genius", McCoist said on BT Sport.

"Gary is a great coach, but he [also] knows the Scottish game, he knows Rangers, he knows the rest of the league.

"So it's been a good start and it looks like Steven has a settled defence, the goalkeeper was a very good signing and the two centre-backs look OK.

"It's a good start, a positive start."

Rangers are in League Cup action on Sunday, with a visit to Steve Clarke's Kilmarnock on the agenda for Gerrard's men.

The Gers then welcome Russian side FC Ufa to Ibrox for the first leg of their Europa League playoff round tie.
