Former Australia international and ex-Borussia Dortmund star Ned Zelic says it is clear to see that a number of journalists have an agenda against Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and cannot wait to smash him.

The Portuguese has again come in for fierce criticism following Manchester United's shock 3-2 defeat away at Brighton on Sunday.

The performance of the Red Devils on the south coast was slammed by a number of pundits and Zelic has hit out at the coverage Mourinho has been receiving.

Zelic says that a number of journalists are just waiting for their chance to lay into the Manchester United manager.

The Australian wrote on Twitter: "Far too much focus on Mourinho after Man Utd's poor display v Brighton. Unfair, unbalanced criticism.

"Pogba lost the ball 27 times in 90 minutes.

"Young cross hit Row Z etc, etc. Many poor individual performances from players who deserve more criticism", Zelic continued.

"It's clear a lot of journalists don't like Mourinho and can't wait for Man Utd to lose so they can smash him.

"Result: game analysis suffers.

"Criticism needs to be more balanced between coach and individual player performances", he added.

Mourinho has been left unhappy by Manchester United's failure to add to the squad to his liking over the summer, with the Red Devils badly stung by the Premier League's decision to close its transfer window earlier than every other major European league.
