Newcastle United and Southampton transfer target Anthony Limbombe has joined Ligue 1 side Nantes on a five-year deal, with the Premier League pair powerless to oppose the French club following the early closure of the English top flight window.

The 24-year-old was in good form for Belgian side Club Brugge last season and helped the club win the league title.

The player featured in 32 league games for his club last term, scoring six goals and setting up an equal amount for his team-mates.

His performances helped to increase his value in the transfer market with a number of clubs in England expressing interest.

Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner had hoped to bring in the player to strengthen his squad, but his efforts failed after Limbombe failed to reach an agreement with the West Yorkshire club.

Both Newcastle and Southampton were also showing an interest in Limbombe, but failed to do a deal before the Premier League window slammed shut.

However, with the European transfer window still open, Nantes have moved in to sign the player and he has been locked down on a five-year deal.

Limbombe has been handed the number 22 shirt by the Ligue 1 club.
