Barnsley are not rivalling Sunderland for the loan signing of Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie, according to BBC Sheffield.

Christie, 23, spent last season on loan at Aberdeen and has struggled to feature prominently for the Scottish champions this season, making just two substitute appearances for the Bhoys.

The loan window for EFL clubs remains open until 5pm today and it was being claimed that Barnsley could rival the Black Cats for Christie’s signature before the deadline.

However, it has now been confirmed that Barnsley are not rivalling Sunderland for the Celtic midfielder, who could still move elsewhere in search of more first team involvement.

Christie is facing a tough task securing regular game time this term under Brendan Rodgers.

Sunderland continue to remain interested in Christie, but a deal can only be sanctioned if they can offload either one of Didier Ndong or Papy Djilobodji from the Stadium of Light within the coming hours.

Jack Ross has remained hopeful about offloading the duo, but with time running out, Sunderland could find themselves in a scramble to sanction a deal for Christie.
