Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes that Paul Pogba is a fantastic player, but will need to get the best out of himself to help the team.

The Frenchman's performances for the Red Devils have been put under the microscope of late, amid a less than perfect relationship with manager Jose Mourinho.

The former Juventus player went on question his team's attitude in the 3-2 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion last month, insisting that their opponents in the game had the edge.

His comments infuriated club legend Paul Scholes, who insisted that there could be "no defence" for such remarks, with manager Mourinho also taking time to insist that questions about Pogba's remarks should be asked to the player himself.

Rooney, who played for Manchester United from 2004 to 2017 before joining Everton, insists that Pogba needs to answer all the criticism that has been levelled at him by way of his own performances on the pitch.

"He [Pogba] is a fantastic player but he has to do it for himself", Rooney told CNN World Sport.

"If they're going to win the title, he'll be the main player in terms of them doing that.

"You hear a lot of people saying Jose Mourinho needs to get the best out of him but he needs to do it for himself and prove he's at that level to help Man United."

Pogba has nevertheless been given the honour of wearing the captain's armband at Manchester United by Mourinho already this season.
