Jose Mourinho has admitted a sense of heartbreak at having to leave Scott McTominay and Ander Herrera out of his team for Manchester United's 2-0 win away at Burnley.

The Portuguese boss was looking for his men to instantly bounce back from losing at home against Tottenham Hotspur.

He saw Romelu Lukaku fire his side ahead at Turf Moor in the 27th minute of the Premier League encounter, before the Belgian struck again just before half time to put Manchester United in cruise control.

Marcus Rashford saw red with 20 minutes left, while Paul Pogba missed a second half penalty, but all in all it was a good afternoon for Mourinho's men.

Herrera came off the bench in the 76th minute, while McTominay was not in the matchday squad, and Mourinho was disappointed not to be able to start the pair.

"The week was so good. I felt so bad leaving out people like Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay – it was heartbreaking to leave them out of the team", Mourinho told Sky Sports.

The Manchester United manager also hailed the crucial nature of taking all three points from the Premier League game.

"The three points were an important thing, the quality of the performance and happiness of the team is an Old Trafford response – the way Old Trafford reacted to the boys in the Spurs defeat was important", Mourinho added.

Manchester United now head into the international break having taken six points from their opening four Premier League games.
